Teen Suicide
As parents, we are accustomed to the emotional ups and downs of our teenage sons and daughters, but rarely do we think of them as so distraught as to have thoughts of suicide. But we need to learn to be more sensitive to the signals, because teen suicide is often associated with what we may view as "normal" teen depressive moods. (Click her for more on teen depression.)
A Teen Suicide Attempt: Jessie
Jesse's mom was terrified to find her daughter lying on her bedroom floor, rapidly losing consciousness. Luckily, Jesse was able to tell her mom that she had taken "a lot of aspirin." Jesse's mom immediately called 911, who dispatched an ambulance and took Jesse quickly to the local hospital. The emergency room doctor pumped Jesse's stomach to remove the toxin, and Jesse began quickly to recover.
It is difficult to imagine anything more frightening to a parent than the attempted suicide of one of their children. If you think there's a chance that your son or daughter has contemplated or is contemplating suicide, what can you do?
