Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)The following are the general criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD:
- The person has been exposed to a traumatic event that involved the possibility of death or serious injury and experienced a feeling of intense helplessness, fear, or horror
- The experience is persistently re-experienced through recollections, dreams, intense distress and the like
- The avoidance of activities, thoughts, places, people, etc., associated with the traumatic event
- Increased arousal, as evidenced by insomnia, irritability, anger, difficulty concentrating, and hyper-alertness
PTSD affects approximately 3.5% of individuals in the US, with more females being affected than males. Rape and childhood sexual abuse are often antecedents to PTSD, which accounts for the higher prevalence of PTSD in females.
