Guiding Your Teen Through Adolescence

What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar Disorder is a condition characterized by intense feelings of “I can do anything,” which may include grandiose or even delusional ideas, to periods of time when nothing seems possible. Bipolar disorders are classified as Bipolar I Disorder (BPI) and Bipolar II Disorder (BPII), both of which have numerous and complicated variations of symptoms. Although there is no known medical or therapeutic cure for Bipolar Disorders (BP), the condition can be managed with medications and psychotherapy. It should be noted that Bipolar Disorder almost never appears alone, in a “pure form”, so to speak, but is complicated by the presence of other disorders, a condition known as comorbidity. Comorbidity complicates diagnosis and makes effective treatment more difficult.

Generally speaking, Symptoms of Teen Bipolar Disorder are characterized by intensely energetic or restless behavior, unusually happy or "high" moods alternating with depressed or extremely irritable moods,  inner feelings of rage or a desire to destroy things, and thoughts that come so fast they cannot be coherently expressed or cause others to complain that they cannot keep up. It is important to  distinguish Symptoms of Teen Bipolar Disorder from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (See Contrasting Bipolar Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
