Guiding Your Teen Through Adolescence

Teen Substance Use - Normal or Abnormal?

If you are concerned about teen substance abuse, you have most likely asked yourself the questions,"What constitutes normal experimentation?" (to some degree, it is "normal," whether we like it or not), and, "When should we be concerned that our teen is on the road to a serious substance problem?" It helps to know that less than 10% of teens continue using substances in adulthood in a manner and frequency that constitutes abuse, dependency, or addiction. However, numerous studies have shown a link between early (preteen and early teen) regular substance use and young adult and adult substance dependence or addiction. If a teen reaches his or her twenties without having developed a substance abuse problem, and particularly if he or she attains 25 without abuse, dependence, or addiction, it is much less likely that the individual will develop a substance problem later in life.
